OpenSSL is hiring for a Communities Manager to join our team.

We are seeking a Communities Manager to join our team. In this role, you will be a part of the team that develops critical components of internet infrastructure that enable secure communications around the world. To be able to hold this position, you must align with and uphold our core values and mission in your everyday professional activities. This role will require you to have strong communication and organisational skills in order to help us identify and establish ties with our diverse communities. You will also be responsible for establishment of regular communication channels with communities and community advisory committees to help drive the project towards fulfilling its mission.

This position is remote. Due to the global nature of the project, we require flexibility in accommodating various time zones outside of conventional business hours. You will be expected to travel globally (including US, Australia and Europe/UK) to meet colleagues, community members and stakeholders, as well as to attend conferences and other similar events as the need arises.

The OpenSSL Project is run by two sister organizations: the OpenSSL Foundation and the OpenSSL Corporation that focus on our non-commercial and commercial communities respectively.

Key Responsibilities

• Community Establishment: Create rules of community membership for the main non-commercial communities engaged with the OpenSSL project. Establish the initial memberships and communication channels for these communities.
• Community Engagement: Create content such as blog posts, webinars, articles, press releases. Actively participate in various online platforms and communities such as Twitter, Mastodon, LinkedIn, StackOverflow, Slashdot, Soylentnews, Hacker News, Lobste.rs, GitHub, and more. Promote OpenSSL and its related projects, initiatives and provide updates to these communities. Organise online meetings with community members to discuss various matters in regards to the OpenSSL project.
• Conference Representation: Represent OpenSSL at industry conferences and events, delivering presentations and engaging with attendees to increase project visibility and cultivate relationships.
• Outreach: Reach out to non-commercial organizations who might benefit from using OpenSSL.
• Feedback Collection: Gather and consolidate feedback and insights from the communities to assist the project in future decision making and product development.

Requirements

• Experience in community management, public relations, or a related field in IT or other technical sectors
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders
• Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal
• Ability to multitask, prioritise, and manage time effectively
• Proven ability to take initiative and work independently
• Strong technical background with understanding of security and privacy technologies

Preferred

• Background working with open-source software projects (strongly preferred)
• Having pre-existing connections with members of the non-commercial communities working with the security and privacy technologies
