FLOSS/fund Backs the Future of Internet Security

Today we celebrate FLOSS/fund, which has made a $100,000 investment in the future of OpenSSL with a contribution to the OpenSSL Foundation. Established by Zerodha in 2024, FLOSS/fund was created with the bold vision of providing $1 million per year to free/libre and open source software projects globally. We are proud to be among the fund’s first tranche of recipients!
In his initial announcement of FLOSS/fund, Kailash Nadh, CTO of Zerodha, shared, “it makes perfect logical sense for a business that relies on FOSS to support it, directly or indirectly, when they freely tap into a global ecosystem of unlimited FOSS innovation—free in both cost and freedom. How many technology companies today could even exist without the massive amounts of FOSS they use?” Zerodha is also a proud supporter of the Open Source Pledge, a global initiative that encourages companies to financially support the open source projects they depend on.
This development support from FLOSS/fund is the first major financial contribution the OpenSSL Foundation has ever received from India. It is a testament to the growth of India’s tech sector and expanding open source community, and to the OpenSSL Library’s importance as a critical component of global internet infrastructure.
The OpenSSL Foundation is a non-profit with a mission to ensure that everyone, everywhere has access to data privacy and security tools, including non-profits, academics, researchers, and independent developers. We rely entirely on financial contributions, corporate sponsorships, and grants for our funding. The Foundation’s small team of three software engineers collectively have over six decades of experience with OpenSSL.
The OpenSSL project is co-equally led by the OpenSSL Foundation and the OpenSSL Corporation.
Contributions like this one from FLOSS/fund provide the financial means for the Foundation to:
- Continue to help guide and grow the OpenSSL project
- Engage, educate, and grow our open source community with the support of a dedicated Community Manager
- Organize the inaugural OpenSSL Conference, which will be held in Prague, Czech Republic on October 7-9, 2025
Thank you to FLOSS/fund for this meaningful contribution to internet security! If you’re a FOSS project that could benefit from this program, learn more and apply at floss.fund/.
If you want to join FLOSS/fund as part of the OpenSSL Foundation’s growing community of supporters, consider making a small monthly contribution on Github Sponsors, a corporate sponsorship through our Code Protectors program, or other direct support. Contributions like these directly fund our engineering costs and other activities that further the OpenSSL mission.
