Cryptocurrency added to donation options
We’re pleased to announce that the OpenSSL Foundation now accepts cryptocurrency donations through our giving partner, The Giving Block. This new option offers donors an easy and secure way to support our mission using Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many other digital assets. Donations can be made easily and securely through this form on our website.
The OpenSSL Foundation does not maintain its own cryptocurrency wallets but partners with The Giving Block to receive the cash equivalent of these donations. One added benefit of this partnership is that you may choose to donate to the OpenSSL Foundation with full anonymity – we will receive your gift but not any of your personal information. (Thank you to our first-ever cryptocurrency donor who made just such an anonymous gift on 6 July 2025!)
In 2013, Save the Children became the first major nonprofit to accept donations of cryptocurrency. Today, more than 70% of Forbes’ Top 100 Charities accept cryptocurrency donations. With this gift type on the rise, we’re hopeful that this will be a useful and convenient option for donors who hold digital assets.
Every gift to the OpenSSL Foundation helps us serve our core communities – academics, non-profits, and independent developers – while innovating and improving the OpenSSL Library. If you want to help us safeguard the internet’s security backbone, explore all of our Ways to Give and choose the option that’s right for you.
