The OpenSSL Foundation serves individual developers, academics, nonprofits, and non-commercial distributions that work with OpenSSL. We are committed to ensuring that individuals from these communities are able to attend the inaugural OpenSSL Conference, taking place in Prague on October 7-9, 2025 and are pleased to provide a limited number of conference scholarships.

Scholarships are funded through the generosity of the Foundation’s donors and sponsors. We are especially grateful to the Code Protectors, whose annual support provides us with the means to undertake new initiatives like this one.

Eligibility requirements

You must already be active with an OpenSSL project (OpenSSL Library, Bouncy Castle or cryptlib) in order to be considered for a scholarship. For example, you might be:

  • contributing issues or PRs to an OpenSSL project;
  • contributing to another open source project that makes use of an OpenSSL project;
  • authoring an academic paper that touches on an OpenSSL project;
  • or some other substantial activity.

Scholarships will only be awarded to individuals who are not paid by a commercial employer to engage with OpenSSL projects. Examples of eligible individuals:

  • Individual developers
  • Academics and students
  • Nonprofit staff
  • Maintainers of packages in free/non-commercial distributions

If you work with an OpenSSL project as part of your paid commercial employment, we expect you or your employer to sponsor your conference participation.

What’s included

Costs covered by this scholarship:

  • Conference registration
  • Three nights of lodging at the conference hotel, including breakfast
  • Lunch and coffee breaks during the conference
  • Evening dine-out event at Grand Bohemia
  • Breakfast with OpenSSL Foundation leadership

Costs that are not included:

  • Travel between your location and the conference venue
  • Ticket to the Pilsner evening event (available for separate purchase at the price of $250)
  • Incidental expenses

Transferability

Scholarships are awarded to an individual and are non-transferable. They are for the 2025 OpenSSL Conference only and cannot be deferred to a future event.

Selection

Scholarships will be awarded based on past and current involvement with OpenSSL projects; the expected contributions the applicant will be able to make to OpenSSL projects as a result of their attendance at the conference; and our goal of ensuring a diverse array of conference participants. Please put time and thought into your responses, as we anticipate there will be more applicants than we can fund.
